New bus network will give better access to Victoria University

More students will have greater access to Victoria University, via connecting 'shuttle' services from a range of hubs around the city, when the new Wellington City bus network is introduced in 2018.

A new network of bus services from 2018 will provide many areas with frequent and fast journeys to Victoria University's Kelburn campus.

Paul Swain, Greater Wellington Regional Council's Public Transport Portfolio Leader, says the new network will enable all students, wherever they live within Wellington City, to transfer at no extra cost from Courtenay Place, the railway station or near Karori Tunnel, to frequent connecting services to the university.  "At the moment, students from suburbs such as Island Bay or Hataitai or the northern suburbs are disadvantaged. They have to pay a two zone or three zone fare into the city then pay another one zone fare to take a bus to the university. The new network will give more students access to a university bus service at no extra cost."

The new network will replace the current Route 18 service to the university. As a consequence some students, who currently have a direct route to the university, will be required to transfer as part of their trip and this has been of concern to the university.  Council officers met with university staff and student representatives this week to discuss their concerns and as a consequence are recommending some further work be done with the university with a view to trialling some limited services extending the direct link between Victoria University and those areas that will be most affected when the Route 18 is replaced in 2018.
