Options for keeping livestock from waterways to be discussed

Protecting the region's lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands from livestock damage will require an all-out effort by landowners, councils and the community.

That is one of the findings of a focus group formed to work through the issues with Greater Wellington Regional Council to determine what policies and regulations should be included in the proposed Natural Resources Plan for the Wellington region.

In response to the release of the draft Natural Resources Plan, the Council received more than 50 comments relating to the exclusion of livestock from waterbodies. Some people and organisations sought minor amendments to the provisions in the draft plan, while others sought a major re-think.

Because the draft rules around livestock access to water bodies would require a change for many landowners a focus group was formed consisting of representatives from key organisations and landowners who commented on the draft plan. The group helped sort through issues such as, what activities could be permitted and where, what activities are likely to need resource consent and what guidance and assistance could be provided to help with costs of fencing, planting and pest control.

The group has identified alternative approaches to be presented to Te Upoko Taiao- Natural Resource Management Committee. The community is invited to hear about these at a number of public presentations.
