This report presents the results of the first volunteer shellfish survey to be carried out in the Onepoto Arm of Porirua Harbour. On November 25 and 26, 2017, teams of community volunteers undertook shellfish sampling at 16 intertidal transects. The four shellfish species of customary importance were identified, counted and measured to estimate their length frequency, numbers, density and distribution. Cockles, topshells, whelks and pipi were all counted and a significant increase in cockle abundance was recorded between the 2015 and 2017 surveys, though the reasons for this are unknown.
