The population of the Wellington Region has grown steadily over the past twenty-five years, from 395,610 in 1986 to approximately 487,700 in 2011 (23.3 per cent). Steady, albeit slowing, growth is projected to continue throughout the projection period, reaching approximately 541,000 by 2031 (10.7 per cent above 2011). Over three quarters of this growth is projected to be at 65+ years.
