Identification and mapping of shallow-water animal-dominated habitats in the Wellington Region
Search in document libraryAbstract: Extensive sponge-dominated communities were found in Wellington Harbour, particularly beds of the massive sponge Suberites australiensis. Other notable habitats included brachiopod beds and polychaete beds. On the open coast, diverse sponge gardens comprised large arborescent sponges with Ecionemia alata a prominent habitat-forming sponge at multiple sites. These sponge-dominated communities exhibit high biodiversity and ecological significance.
