Landfills have the potential to cause adverse effects to human health and
the environment through discharges to air or water and contamination of
soil. The potential for adverse effects is related to a variety of factors
including the age, type and quantities of refuse disposed of at the site, the
location and physical characteristics of the site, and the engineering
design, both during operation and after closure.

A common problem when investigating old landfill sites is the lack of
information regarding precise location, contents and likely discharges.
The report provides what is considered to be an adequate minimum level
of information for all landfill sites identified in the Wellington Region. This
information is used in a simple comparative risk assessment process to
prioritise sites for further investigation.
