A regional view

We have assessed that for a 1% AEP (annual exceedance probability event*) that;

  • Approximately 77,000 commercial and residential buildings are vulnerable to flood impacts. This includes 4,000 commercial buildings and 73,000 residential buildings which represents approximately 31% of all commercial and residential buildings in the region
  • Approximately 197,000 people are exposed to flooding, this is also around 31% of our current population
  • By 2110 across the Greater Wellington Region, a 1% AEP undefended event will impact 17% more people, that is 230,000 people.

*What is a 1% AEP event? Why use this event? A 1% AEP event is a flood event that has a 1% or one in 100 chance of occurring in any given year. This is sometimes referred to as a 1-in-100-year flood. We use this event for our flood hazard mapping as it is industry standard best practice.
