Event details
Due to the forecast for clouds and the overwhelming response to Stars in the Park, we've had to make the challenging decision to postpone the event.
Wainuiomata Regional Park’s facilities and parking can only accommodate a limited number of attendees and vehicles. We prioritise your safety above all, and a potential surge in attendance could compromise that.
We will be announcing new dates shortly. Please head to our Dark Skies page for more information.
Experience the wonders of the cosmos at Stars in the Park, the first in our series of annual stargazing events. Uncover the secrets of the night sky in the pitch darkness of the ancient native forest of Wainuiomata Regional Park.
Gather under the stars by the Ranger's Office at and let the experts from the Wellington Astronomical Society guide you through awe-inspiring celestial wonders. No telescope? No worries! They'll provide equipment and knowledge for you to search the night sky.
There's a universe to discover up there so this is a fantastic chance for both casual and seasoned stargazers to rug up and join us for an evening of stargazing. We’ll provide the hot drinks.
Wainuiomata Regional Park is on its way to achieving dark sky place accreditation. As Wellingtonians, we are incredibly lucky to have this in our backyard. Make the most of this opportunity to see the stars unimpeded.
Light pollution in the city washes out our view of space, and only the brightest stars pierce the glow. Wainuiomata Regional Park is one of the most peaceful spots in the region, yet it has one of the busiest dark skies visible from Earth.
This is a FREE event. A 20-seat shuttle will depart from the carpark by the gate, transporting you to and from the event site. The shuttle will leave the carpark every 20 minutes so you can come and go as you please. The last shuttle will depart at 8:30pm. Private cars are not permitted in this area of the park.
What to bring: torches/headlamps (red lenses preferred), sturdy water-proof footwear, warm and wet weather clothing.
This event is weather dependent. For updates on postponements and cancellations please click 'attending' on our Facebook event page.
