Greater Wellington recognises that our communities live in everchanging environments which can cause circumstances that can be difficult to manage. We can offer support where appropriate, to help our communities thrive. Greater Wellington may provide relief to some or all of your Greater Wellington rates payments (a rate remission) in the case of special or unexpected circumstances.
A rates remission will only be applied where Greater Wellington considers it fair to other rate payers to do so, and where it is believed that your application meets the criteria outlined in the rates remission policy.
If your circumstances have changed and you would like to apply for a rates remission please check the Rates Remission Policy (PDF 68 KB) to make sure you meet the criteria and conditions. Specifically see the sections on ‘remission of penalties’ or a ‘remission under special circumstances.
Please note: Rates remissions can only be applied in the current rating year and cannot be backdated for previous years. If you feel you meet the criteria please apply with the form below.

Next steps
Greater Wellington endeavours to acknowledge your application within ten working days. Upon acknowledgement of your application, we will confirm the process and general timeframes.
Please note: If the amount requested for remission exceeds $500, a formal paper will be presented to Council to make the decision. Remissions under $500 can be processed by Greater Wellington officers.
